As you may know, the US congress is planning to pass an
anti-privacy legislation (SOPA) in one week as well as an new bill,
PIPA, and these bills will allow the government to not only block access to websites for US residents, but also to take down any website with one court order.
EDIT: There have been sources saying SOPA has been shelved. But do understand that the house WILL be creating bills to replace it (like PIPA) until we show them that we will seriously not allow them to censor the internet.
There are currently countries where forms of this law are already in use, and if you live in one of them, you'll know how much a free internet means. For example, in China, the government can block any phrase with so-called "sensitive key words" from being posted, anywhere. The US bill, although claimed to target only copyright infringement, have the power to shut down websites with a court order.
This means many sites we are using now (including dA) will be in danger of closing and this will be affecting everyone outside of the US. The Project
The project itself will be simple. It will be to create an artwork (it can be a full painting to just b/w doodle, it's the idea that counts) using the
censor bar as the central theme. Please don't be afraid of being creative with this, as the censor bar can take on different forms and textures~ : )
If you do decide to join, please upload the work onto any social website between
now-24th! The more the better, because many social networks will be taking hits from the bill once it passes into law.
The goal of this particular project is to bring as many artist together as possible to raise awareness, as many people don't know about/understand SOPA/PIPA! (and honestly I think for dA, artworks work better than journals haha). It is an open project so if anyone else is interested, please forward them this message or spread the word with journals/posts!
